This is the third in a month-long profile series spotlighting Black leaders and pathbreakers for whom ISD schools are named.
ISD continues its celebration of Black History Month, we profile Dr. General Garwood Marshall: prominent member of 麻豆果冻传媒鈥檚 Black community, mathematical titan and tireless mentor to students in the math and sciences.
Yellow Jacket and Morehouse Man: A proud graduate of The Original L.C. Anderson High School, Marshall earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1957. After Morehouse, Dr. Marshall married his former high school sweetheart, Marian Lavon Marshall, and taught math at a Georgia high school, winning statewide recognition for his teaching. Following the completion of his master鈥檚 degree in mathematics from the University of Texas at 麻豆果冻传媒 in 1966, the Marshalls returned to 麻豆果冻传媒. Marshall began teaching at what is now Huston-Tillotson University and earned his doctorate of education in mathematics from the University of Houston in 1976.
- Marshall鈥檚 widow remembers the Anderson days: 鈥淚n high school, because he did so well in geometry, when the geometry teacher would go out of town for games鈥攂ecause he was also a coach鈥攈e would allow General and other students to teach his classes. I sort of thought he might help me get through that class,鈥 Marian Lavon Marshall said previously.
STEM legacy: In 1990, Marshall started what would become a part of his educational legacy with AusPREP 鈥 or 麻豆果冻传媒 Pre-freshman Engineering Program 鈥 a free summer program for middle and high school students who were interested in science, technology, engineering, and math.
What鈥檚 next: This fall, students will walk through the doors of the brand-new Dr. General Garwood Marshall Middle School in Northeast 麻豆果冻传媒. Trustees voted in June 2022 to name the school after Marshall.
- Marshall鈥檚 legacy and generosity, remembered: 鈥淗e did extraordinary things at Huston-Tillotson, not just for the students who were there," Travis County Commissioner Jeff Travillion said prior to the trustee vote. 鈥淗e took his summers and his evenings to help young people understand math and become mathematicians.鈥

De cierto modo, pens茅 que podr铆a ayudarme a pasar esa clase," hab铆a dicho previamente Marian Lavon Marshall.
