The supporters began calling April 28, before there was even a decision on the table for �鶹������ý ISD trustees about what to name its new Northeast �鶹������ý middle school.

Former students, fraternity brothers, community and church members told the board about their hero and friend, a mentor to thousands of students in his 44-year teaching career, Dr. General Garwood Marshall, a prominent member of �鶹������ý’s Black community and a former professor of mathematics at Huston-Tillotson University

“Dr. Marshall is the main reason why I graduated from college,” Harold Flenoy told trustees. “He talked to me when others wouldn’t. He guided me not only throughout my college career but into my own professional life. He remained a mentor to me even until his death.”

They came to talk to trustees in person, too, and spoke with love and gratitude about a man who had spent his life and career in service to others. 

“I have a grandson that will be going to middle school next year, and when children explain who the school is named after, they will have a long list of accolades to speak on about him. I would be so proud to see a school named after Dr. Marshall. And I think that �鶹������ý would be proud to have a school named after him as well,” said community member Crystal Woodard.

Lifetime teacher

Marshall’s widow, Marian Lavon Marshall, described her high school sweetheart as a “real character, he had a great sense of humor.”

Lavon and General began dating their sophomore year at the Original L.C. Anderson High School, dated all through his time at Morehouse College and married in 1957. 

She said that General’s mathematical aptitude was one of the first things that got her attention.

“In high school, because he did so well in geometry, when the geometry teacher would go out of town for games—because he was also a coach—he would allow General and one other student to teach his classes. I sort of thought he might help me get through that class,” she said with a laugh. 

After graduating from Morehouse, General’s first teaching offer as a math teacher took the couple to a high school in Georgia, where they worked for nine years. When General completed his master’s degree, the couple returned to their beloved �鶹������ý after he accepted a teaching position at Huston-Tillotson. 

“He was a lot of things to Huston-Tillotson,” Lavon said, “but one of his major successes was when he started AusPREP in 1990 until our retirement in 2001. He returned each summer for another 10–15 years after that.”

AusPREP—�鶹������ý Pre-freshman Engineering Program at H-T—is a free summer program for middle and high school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

Travis County Commissioner Jeff Travillion highlighted that work when he spoke to trustees. 

“He did extraordinary things at Huston-Tillotson, not just for the students who were there,” Travillion said. “He took his summers and his evenings to help young people understand math and become mathematicians.

“You do the community honor by allowing it to understand who its heroes are. He truly was a hero in this community,” he said. “This might be one of the easiest decisions we could give you to make.”

The trustees approved the name at their June 23 Regular Voting Meeting.

Dr. General Garwood Marshall Middle School

The first students will walk through the doors of Dr. General Garwood Marshall Middle School in fall 2023.

“Our children are just totally excited,” Lavon said after the decision. “I’m still in shock. I really didn’t believe it, because with all that he did, he probably would not have agreed to it, he was basically a sort of shy person.”

One of the many causes General championed during his lifetime was the effort to save Lions Municipal Golf Course, serving on the Save Muny board for more than 30 years. 

Golf legend Ben Crenshaw and his manager Scott Sayers were among the callers back in April: “We can think of no better example for the goodness and strength of character of the �鶹������ý community than the late Dr. General Marshall.”

"El Dr. Marshall es la principal razón por la que me gradué de la universidad", dijo Harold Flenoy a la mesa directiva. "Me hablaba cuando otros no lo hacían. Me guio no sólo a lo largo de mi carrera universitaria, sino también en mi vida profesional. Siguió siendo un mentor para mí incluso hasta su muerte".

"Tengo un nieto que irá a la escuela secundaria el año que viene, y cuando los niños expliquen por qué le pusieron su nombre a la escuela, tendrán una larga lista de elogios para hablar de él. Estaría muy orgullosa de que una escuela llevara el nombre del Dr. Marshall. Y creo que �鶹������ý también estaría orgullosa de tener una escuela con el nombre de él", dijo Crystal Woodard, miembro de la comunidad.

Maestro de toda la vida

La viuda de Marshall, Marian Lavon Marshall, describió a su pareja desde la escuela preparatoria como un "verdadero personaje, tenía un gran sentido del humor".

Lavon y General fueron novios desde su segundo año en la Original L.C. Escuela Preparatoria Anderson y durante todo el tiempo que él estuvo en la Universidad Morehouse y se casaron en 1957. 

Ella dijo que la aptitud matemática de General fue una de las primeras cosas que le llamaron la atención.

"En la escuela preparatoria, como le iba tan bien en geometría, cuando el profesor de geometría salía de la ciudad para jugar -porque también era entrenador- permitía que General y otro estudiante dieran sus clases. En cierto modo, pensé que podría ayudarme a pasar esa clase", dijo riendo. 

Tras graduarse en Morehouse, la primera oferta de trabajo como maestro de matemáticas de General llevó a la pareja a un instituto de Georgia, donde trabajaron durante nueve años. Cuando General terminó su maestría, la pareja regresó a su querida ciudad de �鶹������ý después de que él aceptara un puesto de maestro en Huston-Tillotson. 

"Él fue muchas cosas para Huston-Tillotson", dijo Lavon, "pero uno de sus mayores éxitos fue cuando inició AusPREP en 1990 hasta nuestra jubilación en el 2001. Después volvió cada verano durante otros 10-15 años".

AusPREP-�鶹������ý Pre-freshman Engineering es un programa de Ingeniería en H-T- y es un programa de verano gratuito para los estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria que están interesados en la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas.

El comisionado del condado de Travis, Jeff Travillion, destacó esa labor cuando se dirigió a la mesa directiva. 

"Hizo cosas extraordinarias en Huston-Tillotson, no sólo para los estudiantes que estaban allí", dijo Travillion. "Dedicó sus veranos y sus noches a ayudar a los jóvenes a entender las matemáticas y a convertirse en matemáticos".

"Se le hace honor a la comunidad al permitirle entender quiénes son sus héroes. Realmente fue un héroe en esta comunidad", dijo. "Esta podría ser una de las decisiones más fáciles de tomar que podríamos darles".

La mesa directiva aprobó el nombre en su junta ordinaria de votación del 23 de junio.

Escuela Secundaria Dr. General Garwood Marshall

"Nuestros hijos están totalmente emocionados", dijo Lavon después de la decisión. "Todavía estoy en shock. Realmente no lo creía, porque con todo lo que hizo, probablemente no habría accedido a ello, era básicamente una especie de persona tímida."

Entre las muchas causas que General defendió a lo largo de su vida se encuentra el esfuerzo por salvar el campo de golf municipal de Leones, formando parte de la mesa directiva de Save Muny durante más de 30 años.
