Netflix's hit show Queer Eye gave Navarro Early College High School Cinema students a glitzy prom at the Long Center and dramatic renovation of the school's courtyard. But the impact of the episode goes beyond what viewers see on the small screen.
For Media Arts Teacher Tara Bordeaux鈥檚 students in the Viking Visual Studio program, the real magic happened behind the scenes.
鈥淚 asked a lot of the people who were filming how they got into the industry, and I got to ask genuine questions like how do you film this, light this鈥攋ust watching them from behind the scenes,鈥 said Bryan Aviles, a Navarro graduate who was featured in the Queer Eye episode.
The Viking Visual Studio program trains students to create videos, photography, and audio productions in preparation for work in creative fields. But when classes went remote, the hands-on, collaborative experiences that mark the program became impossible.
鈥淭he program had been a little dead during the pandemic because you don鈥檛 get to give kids real-world experiences with mentors and industry partners,鈥 said Bordeaux, the 2018 Texas Teacher of the Year. 鈥淪enior year they felt like they didn鈥檛 get to do the program, so for them to have the biggest experience of all was incredible. They got to see what filmmaking looks like, and be a part of something.鈥
The students, who graduated in 2021, worked with producers, casting directors, cinematographers, and even the Fab Five鈥揔aramo Brown, Bobby Berk, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness鈥揻or weeks to film the episode. During that time, Co-Executive Producer Lyndsey Burr formed bonds with the students and said she was in awe of the students鈥 eagerness to learn and experience the life of a production.
鈥淭he mentorship went beyond the teachers in the school鈥攖hey were working with us to produce the prom, they were producing the show,鈥 Burr said. 鈥淓ssentially you can call them all producers of the show. It was a really collaborative experience to be able to have that time with them.鈥

El exitoso programa Queer Eye de Netflix les dio a los estudiantes de Cine de la Escuela Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana Navarro un baile de graduaci贸n deslumbrante en el Centro Long y una renovaci贸n dram谩tica al patio de la escuela. Pero el impacto del episodio va m谩s all谩 de lo que los televidentes ven en la pantalla peque帽a.
Para los estudiantes de la maestra de Artes Medi谩ticas Tara Bordeaux en el programa Estudio Visual de los Vikings, la verdadera magia ocurri贸 tras bastidores.
"Les pregunt茅 a varias de las personas que estaban filmando c贸mo entraron en la industria y pude hacer preguntas sinceras, como c贸mo se filma esto, se ilumina esto... simplemente verlas tras bastidores", dijo Bryan Avil茅s, un graduado de Navarro que apareci贸 en el episodio de Queer Eye.
El programa Estudio Visual de los Vikings capacita a los estudiantes para crear videos, fotograf铆as y producciones de audio como preparaci贸n para trabajar en campos creativos. Pero cuando las clases pasaron a ser remotas, las experiencias pr谩cticas colaborativas que distinguen al programa se volvieron imposibles.
"El programa hab铆a estado un poco muerto durante la pandemia, porque no se les pod铆a dar a los ni帽os experiencias del mundo real con mentores y socios de la industria", dijo Bordeaux, Maestra del A帽o de Texas de 2018. "12.掳 grado sinti贸 que no pudo hacer el programa, as铆 que el hecho de que ellos hayan tenido la experiencia m谩s grande de todas fue incre铆ble. Pudieron ver c贸mo es un rodaje y formar parte de algo鈥.
Los estudiantes, que se graduaron en 2021, trabajaron con productores, directores de casting, cinemat贸grafos e incluso los fabulosos cinco (Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, Tan France, Antoni Porowski y Jonathan Van Ness) por semanas para filmar el episodio. Durante ese tiempo, la coproductora ejecutiva Lyndsey Burr estableci贸 v铆nculos con los estudiantes y dijo que estaba asombrada de su entusiasmo por aprender y experimentar la vida de una producci贸n.
"La pasant铆a fue m谩s all谩 de los maestros de la escuela; estaban trabajando con nosotros para producir el baile de graduaci贸n, estaban produciendo el programa", dijo Burr. "Esencialmente se los puede llamar a todos productores del programa. Fue una experiencia realmente colaborativa haber podido pasar ese tiempo con ellos".
